Rail Museum
Located strategically behind the Mysore Railway Station, right down Irwin
Road is the lesser known, but impressive Mysore Rail Museum where you
can nostalgically stride down memory lane. The 27-year-old museum, exhibits
coaches, equipment and records related to the Mysore State Railways. These
vintage beauties preserved for posterity, evoke images of the rolling
wheels and bellowing smoke that were unique to steam engines. In an era
dominated by electrical and diesel engines, the museum flaunts the power
and majesty of these steam locomotives.
The very first exhibit that grabs your attention is a converted four-wheel
goods brake van manufactured in 1923 by Stable Ford and Company, England.
The goods wagon has been cut open in the middle to provide for a 'window'
to issue tickets.
The
Chamundi Gallery has a collection of historical paintings and photographs
in a circular building, which narrates the 'Rail Story'. This depicts
how trains were introduced, with 'Locomotion I' - a steam loco built by
George Stephenson in 1825 at Stockton in England. For those interested
in the evolution of signals, there is a pictorial description of signals
that were in use in the early era of steam locomotives; in addition there
are books on rail history, a rare collection of photographs etc.
The star attraction of the museum is the battery operated mini train
especially for the children.
